slipping away

24Sep08

We know when we’re slipping away. We feel the tug of a person we don’t know, trying to take away everything we used to know. When nothing is left, we go on unable to find a trace of what used to reside here. The unknown beckons to us, trying to hold us in its icy grasp.

Stuck, we create a new self. A self surrounded by impenetrable walls to keep out what we most desire to let in. This self-restraint protects the memories of worse days, of days when we could just give in. What it doesn’t protect us from is the rare moments of vulnerability that engulf us on those better days. Days when the stars seem to be shining down on the walls of self-preservation.
